Essex Softball: Week 1 in the books and, no surprise, Livingston is No. 1

Livingston ‘s impressive back-to-back 1-0 wins over Nutley on April 5 and St. John Vianney today moves the Lancers back to No. 1 in Essex County.

While the bats haven’t warmed up, yet, Livingston does get the timely hit. On Friday, it was Kylie McLaughlin and Sammi Rothenberger getting the job done in the first inning and two days later, Marina Lombardi laced a two-out double into the gap to plate the only run in a big victory at the Immaculate Heart Academy Tournament over an outstanding St. John Vianney team.

Couple the clutch hits with Jess Peslak’s pitching and it will be interesting to see how Livingston handles this week’s slate of games. The Lancers host Mount St. Dominic on April 8, then visit Newark Academy a day later. On April 10, the team takes on Caldwell. After a few days off, it’s off to the Mount St. Dominic T0urnament on April 13 for two contests, the first against IHA in ‘the game that never was’ in 2012, then later opposite Caravel Academy of Delaware.

Mount St. Dominic will attempt to make a statement on April 8 when it travels to Livingston for a Super Essex Conference matchup. The teams met three times last year, with Livingston capturing all three via the shutout route, including the Essex County Tournament final.

The Lions are off to a 4-0 start. Cedar Grove did upset Livingston earlier last week, but West Essex came back to beat Cedar Grove and the Knights could be starting to ignite, as well. And then there’s Nutley, which was very impressive in its first week of the 2013 season.

Here’s a look at the first Top 10 in Essex this season.

1-Livingston (3-1)

2-Mount St. Dominic (4-0)

3-Nutley (2-1)

4-West Essex (2-2)

6-Bloomfield (2-0)

7-Glen Ridge (3-0)

8-Caldwell (2-2)

9-Montclair Kimberley (3-0)

10-Newark Academy (2-1)
